We’ve heard myths about how eating two or more per week is dangerous and other such rubbish, so here are the facts on everyone’s favourite oval, shell-covered foodstuff.

Eggs are a top source of high quality protein – the building block of healthy muscle. Just two eggs provides nearly one quarter of the daily protein required by an average man.

These chickens that never were, also contain a wide range of vitamins and minerals, namely, A (maintains healthy immune system, skin and eyes), B2 (Involved in energy production), B12 (involved in cell replication, and healthy blood and nerves), D (important for the development and maintenance of healthy bones.), and E (acts as a powerful antioxidant that keeps cell membranes healthy).

Eggs are also a good source of iron, which is vital for the transport of oxygen around body, phosphorous, which is important for energy, metabolism and healthy bones, zinc, which is involved in over 200 roles including wound healing and selenium; an important antioxidant.

It has long been claimed that eating any more than two eggs per week is bad for your health, but we’re happy to report that this is rubbish.

The myth stems from a belief that eggs can increase your cholesterol. However, a review by Egg Scientific Research at our very own Trinity College Dublin, found that while eggs do have a cholesterol content, is does not directly influences blood cholesterol.

So, you can happily put away seven eggs a week without any fear of increasing your chances of a heart attack. In fact, you can eat quite a few more eggs per week if you’re happy to discard the yolk, which contains most of the fat, calories and other trace elements.

While a whole egg will normally have around 70 calories, egg whites are completely fat free and contain just 17 calories.
