Who doesn’t want to be that little bit healthier? Especially if improving your health involves minimal effort. With this in mind we’ve made it our mission to bring you news each week of a product, a foodstuff, an exercise technique or a pill that promises potentially magical health-giving properties.
This week’s magic ingredient: The kiwi
Not to be confused with: Pee Wee Herman, Teepee, that country beside Australia.
I love kiwis! I’ll get my spoon. That’s great; Kiwi’s are not only delicious, but are also an excellent source of Vitamin C. Amazingly, they contain more of the vitamin than oranges.
I always thought the orange was king of fruits when it came to vitamin C? Nope. Kiwis are superior to oranges. They also contain more potassium than bananas. It’s like some sort of super-fruit!
Where do kiwis come from? Although many people associate the kiwi with New Zealand, its origins are Chinese. New Zealand are a large exporter of the fruit, however, the World’s largest producer of kiwi is Italy, which produces almost a billions pounds of the fluffy fruit a year.
I worry about my health. Can kiwis prevent anything? Why yes it can. Kiwi offers a very good source of fibre, which helps decrease the chances of getting colon cancer. Fiber also helps reduce cholesterol levels, which will lower your chances of having a heart attack (provided you follow a balanced diet, that is).
Does kiwi taste nice in a smoothie? Kiwi is an excellent ingredient when making a tasty smoothie. Make a smoothie with one full kiwi, a handful of strawberries, chopped passion fruit, natural yogurt and pure apple juice. It goes down easy.
How about something stronger? Well, if you must! Kiwi juice goes great with vodka and a dash of Grenadine syrup. If your head hurts the next morning, you’ve probably drank too many.
Any side effects from eating kiwis? No. We recommend you eat them regularly. The fact that they’re really tasty is just a bonus, so go down to your supermarket and stock up.
