“Families across this country are in crisis. They’re watching helpless as their loved ones self destruct.”
Late last year, Cat O Broin wrote this piece – anonymous at the time – about the difficulties facing her family as they struggled to deal with the mental health issues of her brother Caoilte.
Sadly, Caoilte died by suicide a month later.

In this moving speech at last week’s ‘#JOElive: Mental Health’ event in Dublin, Cat talks about more than 500 families who are affected by suicide in Ireland every year, and how mental health services are struggling to help people through suicidal ideation, self harm and other serious problems.
“Mental illness can hit any of us at any time. Caoilte could have been anyone’s brother, but he was my brother.”
