Video: This 77-year old grandmother in the US is probably better at lifting weights than you

Never will ‘I’m too old for this sh*t’ be accepted as a legitimate excuse again.

Never will ‘I’m too old for this sh*t’ be accepted as a legitimate excuse again.

Lifting weights has become a pretty popular way of working out in Ireland in recent years and if you spend enough time in the gym you’ll realise that it’s not just young whippersnappers pumping iron these days.

That said, you wouldn’t really expect to come across too many 77-year olds on the bench press, let alone a 77-year old woman who can lift weights that would put someone 50 years her junior to shame.

Willie Murphy only took up weightlifting a few years ago but she now competes in powerlifting competitions and was recently named as the ‘Lifter of the Year’ at the WNPF (World Natural Powerlifting Federation) World Championships.

Despite being born before the second World War, Willie can do one-handed push-ups and pull-ups, she can do fingertip push-ups and she can deadlift over 90kg.

And don’t even think about giving her a hand pushing her car or shovelling snow because she’s well able to look after herself in that regard too.

Considering that the New Year is less than a month away, many of you will be embarking on new fitness regimes in 2015, but when you’re thinking about giving it all up three weeks in, think of Willie Murphy and think again.
