The World Health Organisation predicted a pretty chilling figure today – World Cancer Day – stating that Ireland’s cancer cases could rise 72 per cent by 2030.
The World Cancer Research Fund has released figures which shows that Ireland could have 33,416 new cases of cancer by 2030 if current trends continue to grow. Ireland has the biggest predicted rise among the 27 EU member states.
So why does Ireland look to be a hotbed for future cancer cases? Well according to the World Cancer Research Fund, our ageing population and the projected growth in total population are the major factors that have been taken into account.
So why aren’t we getting the hell out of Dodge? Well, according to RTÉ News the figures don’t take into account the use of screenings or changes in lifestyle habits. So there’s still hope… if we give up the smokes and cut back on the booze.
Second on the list of predicted rises in future cancer cases was Cyprus, which is expected to see a 55 per cent increase in the number of cases, followed up by Luxembourg at 53 per cent.
