400 Club – Bugatti Veyron

Oisin Collins

The 400 Club is reserved for the fastest supercars ever built, so to kick things off there could only be one choice: The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport.

When you hear the name Bugatti you being to hear the roar of a massive 8L 1,200hp engine. Or at least you should, seeing as it’s one of the sweetest sounds ever produced (but that’s coming from a petrol head). The Veyron SS really is the epitome of a supercar and that’s evident from the company’s website as it reads: ‘[The Veyron has] a limited top speed of 415 km/h (to protect the tyres).’

Yes, this car is so fast that Bugatti had to electronically slow it down, just so the tyres wouldn’t begin to disintegrate beneath the driver. Crazy…

With that in mind, it’s no surprise that the Veyron SS is the fastest production car in the world, according to the good folk at the Guinness World Records. Now, you might remember hearing something about the Veyron having it’s ‘Fastest Production Car in the World’ title revoked due to the speed limiter being removed for the record, but thankfully – for the guys at Bugatti at least – that record was reinstated after some follow up testing.

“Following a thorough review conducted with a number of external experts, Guinness World Records is pleased to announce the confirmation of Bugatti’s record of Fastest production car achieved by the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport. The focus of the review was with respect to what may constitute a modification to a car’s standard specification. Having evaluated all the necessary information, Guinness World Records is now satisfied that a change to the speed limiter does not alter the fundamental design of the car or its engine.”

The limited speed on the Veyron SS is a ‘cruising speed’ of 415km/h while it’s raw unrestricted top speed comes in at 431.072 km/h (267.856 mph). That’s sure to pick you up a few penalty points.

While it may be the supercar that almost every petrol head dreams about, only a hand full could ever afford the whopping €1.7 million price tag. So we’ll just enjoy the pictures instead.
