The superheroes of the fruit world.

Are you getting enough fruit in your diet? More importantly, are you getting enough of the right types of fruit?

innocent will be bringing its Littlest Juice Bar to the streets of Dublin from 30 January to 1 February so you can try out their new range of super juices for free. That’s one way to ensure you hit your five-a-day target. It also got us thinking about what types of fruits you should be adding to your diet.

Not all fruits are created equal and some fruits just have a little bit more to offer. We’ve looked at some examples of superfruits that can offer some pretty impressive health benefits. Not to mention add a bit of much-needed flavour to your diet. Here are seven super fruits that are worth adding to your shopping list.

1. Papaya

Why: It can help to reduce weight and improve digestion.

Papaya is low in calories and high in fibre, so it can help you to reduce weight and cholesterol. The big benefit to eating it is that it contains digestive enzymes that clean out your digestive tract. That’s good news if you suffer from indigestion, constipation or upset stomachs. It’s also a good source of Vitamins A, C and E.

2. Guava

Why: It’s a great source of Vitamin C and packed with antioxidants.

That’s guava. Not to be confused with guano! Oranges may be famous sources of Vitamin C but a slice of guava has more than twice as much as a slice of orange. Vitamin C is vital for cell and tissue growth and repair. It can keep your skin looking fresh so you may want to add it to your diet to fend off those wrinkles! Guava can also lead to lower blood sugar, help your heart and boost your immune system.

3. Goji berries

Why: They’re full of antioxidants and Vitamin C.

This Chinese wonder berry has been rated number one on the ORAC scale (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) by the US Department of Agriculture. It’s packed with antioxidants and it boosts circulation to the skin, helping to prevent ageing and keep your complexion healthy.

4. Figs

Why: A great source of potassium and calcium.

What the fig? It turns out that we’ve all been ignoring figs for far too long. This sweet fruit is more than just a novel addition to yoghurts or cereals. They’re packed with potassium, which helps to regulate and lower your blood pressure. They’re also good sources of calcium, which is needed for strong bones.

5. Blueberries

Why: They improve memory and are full of antioxidants.

This vitamin-rich “brain berry” has been found to boost brain health and to slow down age-related memory impairments. Studies have shown that they improve memory performance and boost brain performance. That all sounds good to us!

6. Avocados

Why: Full of monounsaturated fat and fatty acids.

Yup, avocado is a fruit in case you were wondering. Avocados are more than just the hipster’s brunch of choice. They’re full of “healthy fats” can increase your “good cholesterol,” or high density lipoprotein. Studies have found that avocados can reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

7. Dragon fruit

Why: It can improve stomach health, and help blood sugar or energy levels.

This exotic looking fruit is recommended for diabetics because its high fibre amounts help to regulate blood sugar levels. It’s also good for your digestive system. As if that wasn’t enough, it’s a good source of monounsaturated fats and low in cholesterol. This is one dragon that packs a powerful punch.
