Pack your bags, it’s time to go to college.
Going to uni can be a daunting, but it doesn’t have to be.
Together with the good folks over at the Credit Union, we’ve put together a list of 10 things you can do to make the most of this experience.
So sit back, relax and take notes… or just copy them from your friends later.
Do that thing you’ve always wanted to do
From stand-up comedy to quidditch; college has a society for almost everything.
Embrace living out of home
This might be your first time living out of home, so enjoy having new housemates and fending for yourself.
Although you should still probably lock your room for the first few weeks…
Be organised
Lecturers get paid whether you attend or not.
It’s your responsibility to be there, to take notes and meet deadlines. You’re not in secondary school now, boyo.
Take advantage
Whether it’s a free burrito or cheaper travel, there are plenty of mighty little perks that student card of yours will provide.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help
From careers, to councillors, to the student union; every college has groups that are there for people who require a little extra help. Don’t be afraid to ask.
Build your CV
Most journalists write for their student newspaper, many barristers were once part of the debating society and a good few actors learned their trade in their college drama society.
College is a great place to gain experience and knowledge in your chosen field.
Cook more than just noodles and pizza
Both of those are great and all, but if you’re going to get through a few years in uni, you should probably have a few more recipes up your sleeve.
Go home every now and again
They’ll be delighted to see you and you’ll be delighted to get your washing done.
Just ask them out
That hot person who sits in front of you in the lecture hall, just ask them out. The worse they can do is say no…
So there you have it, 9 steps to making your college experience much better. We didn’t even mention all those wonderful all-night study sessions you’ll have to do…
Going to College can be expensive. Credit unions offer competitive rates on student loans. It’s a straightforward offer – no administration fees and no hidden charges. For more information, log on to creditunion.ie or simply call in to your local credit union and enquire about a student loan.
