A bar run by two Irish guys in New York has been named as the best bar in the world

Well done lads

Conor Heneghan

If you’re in the Big Apple, pop in for a pint.

Irish people may not be the best in the world at everything, but we sure know how to run a pub and have spread that knowledge to virtually every corner of the world.

As if to prove our expertise in the field, a bar in New York run by two lads from Belfast has this week been given a Spirited Award for the world’s best bar; the Spirited awards being described as ‘the Oscars’ of the bar world by the victors themselves.

The two lads, Jack McGarry and Sean Muldoon from Belfast (pictured with bar manager Jillian Vose above), run the Dead Rabbit bar on Water Street in New York’s Financial District and have been doing so since the bar opened in 2013.

It didn’t take long for the awards to start flooding in as fast as the customers because as well as winning the world’s best bar and best cocktail menu this year, the bar won best American cocktail bar and best drinks selection in 2014 and the world’s best new cocktail bar and best cocktail menu in 2013.

Individually, meanwhile, Sean McGarry also won International Bartender of the Year in 2013.

In a statement on the bar’s Facebook page, the lads responded to the award by saying: “Wow.

“Words are failing us after the results of the Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards last night. After five years of struggle to manifest our best hopes of what a bar could be, we’re honored for the Dead Rabbit to have been named World’s Best Bar.

“This is the culmination of all the work that so many have participated in. Our thanks go out to everyone in our community who has made this possible.

“And we’ll see you in the bar.”

Enjoy the celebrations lads.

Hat-tip to Daniel Smith for the heads up on this one
