A very surprising number of JOE readers didn’t go to mass for Christmas

Carl Kinsella

An interesting sign of the times.

If there’s one thing Ireland is known for after our fondness for drink and the exploits of Bono, it’s our traditional commitment to the Catholic church.

For more than one reason, our religious devotion has been ebbing of late – and that has been closely reflected by the results of our JOE poll.

We asked our readers if they went to see baby Jesus on his birthday, and a whopping 46% told us that they didn’t go to mass this Christmas (and never do).

A massive 4,618 people had their say. A solid enough 23% said that they are regular churchgoers, where as 30.6% pay ‘crib-service’ (only go at Christmastime).

But the results are conclusive, the largest category of people by far are those who want nothing to do with mass on Christmas day.
