An Irishman saved a stranger’s life in Indiana last night

Tony Cuddihy

Because of Barry Moore’s quick thinking, this man gets to see his wife and family again.

The importance of learning how to perform CPR is shown here, as an Irishman in Indiana tells the story of how he saved a total stranger’s life.

As Barry was preparing to finish his shift at work, a man collapsed at a nearby basketball court.

Barry takes up the story, and if this doesn’t show the value of learning first aid then nothing will.

He writes:

Last night, the craziest thing happened, one of those things where you think to yourself “it’ll never happen to me”… I was at work, getting ready to finish my shift when a man went into cardiac arrest on the basketball court, he collapsed and was unresponsive!

I ran for the AED, hooked it up to his chest and began CPR… After what must have been about 7/8 minutes of CPR and two shocks from the AED, his heart rate returned and I heard this man tell me “I’m here, I’m here”. Paramedics arrived shortly after and took him to hospital. They thanked me and told me that I had saved this man’s life, only then did I realize what had just happened!

The reason I am posting about this is to urge everyone to take a course in CPR, CFR or something similar! I took the CFR course back in 2012 and then again in 2014… Only for having done those, I would not have been able to help that man, a man who gets to see his wife and family again this morning!

Barry’s brother Conor shared his story with us, and has just got back in touch to let us know that the gentleman who had taken has had two stents put in and is expected to make a full recovery.
