Heavy rain in many areas has made driving treacherous in many parts of the country, with drivers advised to take extra care on the roads this Sunday.

The wet conditions mean that drivers could be at risk of aquaplaning on Irish roads today.

Gardaí have warned of the potential of surface water on many roads, plus there are some reports of more severe localised flooding.

The Galway to Headford road is flooded and there is also flooding around Gort and on the outskirts of Tullamore, Mullingar and on the Carlow to Athy road.

AA Roadwatch report that the N72 Mallow to Killarney Rd is closed until further notice in Kanturk between Dromough School and Ballymaquirk Cross following an earlier fatal road traffic collision.

The N3 Cavan to Dublin Rd is closed until further notice on the Cavan side of Virginia following an earlier serious crash. Diversions are in place.

The N18 Galway to Ennis Rd is partially flooded at Kiltartan and Gardaí are advising extreme care on the N2 Dublin to Monaghan Rd between Collon and Ardee due to excessive surface water.
