BMW have issued a recall of 533 of their luxury 5, 6 and 7 series cars in Ireland. The cars are those powered by V8 and V12 engines, and the recall is part of a global recall affecting up to 350,000 cars.

The recall is a precautionary measure and relates to the power braking system, with a potential leak of fluid within the system causing a vacuum and a reduction in the level of power braking assistance.

The actual braking mechanism is not affected by the potential fault and BMW have said that there is no risk to safety as the brakes themselves still work properly. There have been no accidents caused relating to this issue.

If the fault developed, drivers would notice that they needed to press down harder on the brake pedal.

The affected models are V8 and V12 powered BMW 5, 6, and 7 Series and Rolls Royce motor cars, produced between July 2001 and November 2009.

BMW could have issued instructions for dealers to fix the problem as part of future routine servicing of their cars but decided to make the recall.

This comes in the wake of other recalls involving much more serious problems involving such manufacturers as Toyota, who had cars with ‘sticky’ accelerators that could potentially go out of control and Ferrari who recalled all of its model 458 Italia sports cars produced before July 2010 after four of them caught fire.

Any concerned BMW owners should contact BMW customer service on 1890 719 420.
