A survey for SafeFood has shown that many lunch wraps sold across the country have as many calories as a 12” pizza.
The survey looked at 240 wraps from 80 outlets across Ireland, with many containing up to 1,000 calories and high in both salt and fat content.
According to the group’s statistics, one person in every three believes that a wrap is healthier than a normal sandwich, whereas a tortilla wrap contains just as many calories as two slices of bread.
Chicken Caesar Salad, Chicken Tikka and Chicken Salad were the three most popular fillings, with the report showing that eating a large Chicken Tikka wrap with crisps and a soft drink accounts for 1,400 calories, or 60% of a person’s daily recommended intake.
Not all Chicken Tikka wraps are bad for you, though – while some of those tested came in at 977 calories, other smaller wraps contained on 267 calories. Total fat was 59g compared to 6g.
If you want to keep the wrap option but lose the calories, SafeFood’s study is recommending opting for lean meats and fish, adding more fresh salad vegetables and cutting back on sauces.
