The dos and don’ts of your first couples holiday

A couple’s first holiday can often be a make or break moment in their relationship.

Going away for the first time can be a bit scary but it doesn’t have to be a big deal. We’ve come up with some handy tips to help you make it through your first overseas adventure.

Do ease yourself in

A city break in Europe can be a good way to test the waters on your first holiday together. If you’re still talking after a short break in Crete, it’s probably safe to book a longer trip when you get back!

Don’t be too ambitious

Sure, backpacking through a South American jungle could be a memorable adventure. Still, getting blisters on your blisters and worrying about everything that’s trying to poison/bite/kill you could be enough to sink a fledgling relationship!

Do plan ahead

Do your homework before you get anywhere near a plane. Chat about what you both expect from a holiday, and find things that you both want to do. For instance, Game of Thrones fans might opt for a trip to Dubrovnik to indulge their shared passion and check out the location used for King’s Landing.

Don’t be afraid to improvise

It’s nice to have a loose plan but it doesn’t mean you can’t introduce a little spontaneity. You don’t want your first holiday to end up feeling like a school tour and half the fun is finding new places that weren’t in the guide book.

Do be honest

“That looks like my worst nightmare come to life interesting…” Trust us. The trip will go a lot smoother if you’re honest with each about what you want to do.

Don’t panic if you have argument

An argument doesn’t mean that your relationship is doomed. Everything gets magnified when it’s just the two of you in a strange place. It can get a little intense and it’s easy for tempers to fray. The trick is not letting it ruin the holiday.

Do spend some time apart

There’s no rule that says you have to spend every waking minute together. Maybe one of you wants to spend an hour by the pool or the other one wants to do a bit of shopping. Giving each other a bit of space doesn’t have to be a bad thing.

Don’t abandon your other half

Giving each other space is one thing. Ditching your girlfriend to go to the club with a hen party is only going to end in tears.

Do drink sensibly

There’s nothing wrong with having a few drinks on holiday but nobody wants to babysit a drunk in a foreign country.

Don’t forget practicalities

Sure, a first holiday should be all about romantic strolls and getting lost in each other’s eyes but discussing simple things like how much you want to spend and how often you need to eat can make a huge difference. As you’ll discover if your partner gets hangry because you refused to stop for a snack.

Do talk to each other

This isn’t exactly a revolutionary concept but it’s the best way to survive your first trip and any problems you might encounter along the way. Keep chatting and avoid angry silences, especially if someone loses their passport or forgets to book a bus to the airport!
