Dublin airport is open today as are all other main airports across Ireland. But the weather is still making it tough going on the roads.

Workers spent the night clearing snow from the runway at the capitals airport, ensuring the capital’s airport opened as normal on Tuesday after severe weather closed the runway for a good chunk of Monday.

Between 300 and 400 stranded passengers spent Monday night in the terminal.

Passengers travelling out of the country by plane are being advised to check that their flights haven’t been cancelled as there is still major disruption to flight schedules across Europe.

People travelling home for Christmas are slowly making it back, however many still face difficulties. Over at Heathrow, only one of their runways is open, meaning that only a third of the regular flight schedule is currently operating.

Away from the airports, there were heavy snowfalls of snow in Monaghan overnight, where temperatures hit -12C. Castlebar, Co Mayo suffered heavy snow early on Tuesday morning.

Meanwhile on the other side of the country, Wicklow was under fresh snow and the N11 was very icy.

If you can, stay at home today. If your pipes haven’t frozen, make yourself a warm drink and throw a log on the fire. Use the weather as an excuse for not doing any Christmas shopping, grab a DVD boxset and settle down in front of the telly.
