What €1,300 in rent per month will get you in Dublin is so, so disheartening

Alan Loughnane

Where will the madness end?

Last year, Dublin ranked in at number 47 out of the top 51 cities in the world to emigrate to.

Compiled by expat community InterNations, 13,000 people had their say, with Dublin only managing to come ahead of Riyadh, Paris, Jeddah and Lagos in the rankings.

The failures of our housing market mean that if you enter our fair city, the chances are you’re going to be paying through the roof for standards of housing which surely don’t match up to cost, in a lot of cases.

As bad as they are now, it’s looking increasingly likely that they’re only going to get worse for the next while, according to industry group the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland.

They predicted in key 2018 forecasts that rents will rise even higher in the next year.

“The survey predicts that despite the introduction of rental caps in Dublin and Cork, residential rents will rise on average by 8% nationally. Most surveyors believe the rental market is in crisis and that the rental cap has forced a significant number of landlords to exit the market,” the body said.

Then you see apartments to let in Dublin, such as the one below on Parnell Street for €1,300 a month (if you sleep three, it’s available for €1,100 if you sleep two), and you wonder where it’s all going to end?

For reference, this is just one we found in a quick search on Daft.ie, it’s certainly not the worst one out there, and that’s a scary thought.
