Expectations v Reality: JOE reveals the refreshing truth about studying for exams

Reading this article might get you better grades. Might.

JOE

It’s the most vulgar four letter word there is, EXAM.

It’s almost that time of the year again. Colleges are going on their mid-term breaks and then it’s exam season.

We’re all seasoned professionals when it comes to exams here in the JOE HQ. But if you’re new to college, you may have some expectations which aren’t quite right.

Allow us to shatter those illusions.

Expectation: There’ll be loads of seats in the library. And plugs too. Any amount of them.

Reality: The queue for seats is longer than the one in Boojum at lunch-time. You probably would have known this if you were in the library at ANY other time during the year.

This is NUIG’s James Hardiman library the first day of study week.

Expectation: All the books you need will be available.

Reality: You REALLY should have become more familiar with the library before study week. That one book you need… yeah, that’s been on loan since 1998 and/or doesn’t exist.

Expectation: If you cram all night, you’ll get the grades you want.

Reality: If you decide to cram all night, you’ll end up studying for 15 minutes, then watch 3 episodes of Better Call Saul and fall asleep at 1:45am.

Expectation: Studying in a group will improve your knowledge of any given subject tenfold.

Reality: Studying in groups will improve your knowledge of who your mate Paddy thinks Liverpool should sign this summer and who shifted Aoife at the Commerce Ball.

Expectation: When these exams are over you’re going to party like crazy.

Reality: When these exams are over you’re going to get a feeling of anti-climax followed by crippling fatigue.

Expectation: That lecturer you have great craic with is going to give you a great result.

Reality: That lecturer you think you have great craic with doesn’t even know your name.

You should now know what to expect from your studying experience. You’re welcome.

Sprite, the truth is refreshing.
