The rumours and pre-launch hype were true – Nike are actually releasing the same ‘futuristic’ shoe that appeared in Back To The Future 2. Now here’s how you can get them.

After a few secretive tweets from movie producer Rob Marshall and a teaser video, the Nike MAG has arrived – four years ahead of schedule, its 2015 future setting appearence in Back to the Future II.

Nike last night revealed that the 1,500 MAGs will be auctioned on eBay from September 8-18, with all net proceeds from the auction sales going directly to the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. If you’re not yet excited by this LED-electroluminescent release, take a look at the clips below:

“We wanted to translate the excitement people have for the ‘greatest shoe never made’ and for the Back to the Future into positive action,” said Nike CEO Mark Parker of the releases.

“But the long term objective is to raise awareness so the foundation can achieve their goal of eradicating Parkinson’s disease.”

The shoes are Nike’s first-ever ‘rechargeable sneakers’ and feature a glowing LED panel and electroluminescent Nike logo, while both will glow for five hours per charge. Sadly, the prospect of self-tying laces will have to wait, although Nike actually patented that technology late last year.

The auctions began last night and each day 150 pairs of the MAGs will be available for bidding. So thankfully, you won’t have to queue outside the Lone Pine Mall for hours on end – you can just follow this link instead.

A word of warning, however. As of this writing, some of the shoes are worth $5,000 with 16 hours to left until the auction ends. Are you rich enough to compete with the likes of Kanye West for these footwear marvels? Let’s hope so.

Overall, it’s great work from Nike for a great cause – now where’s our hoverboards?!
