High fashion meets high street as Versace teams with H&M

Donatella Versace has announced she will be creating a line of clothing for H&M.

Donatella Versace has announced she will be creating a line of clothing for H&M. Its a move that was once dubbed impossible by critics and also by the woman herself.

The line will see some slick, smooth tailoring for the men and colourful prints for the ladies.

The move comes somewhat of a shock, as Donatella had told New York Magazine in 2008, “I respect everyone who makes the move to high street. But the reason I didn’t do it is because I work very hard to put the Versace line in the luxury section. I think to put the Versace line in H&M would confuse the brand.”

Donatella also said that diffusion into high street fashion was simply not what Versace was about. However, the new announcement is not to be seen as diffusion into the market, rather it is the creation of an ‘Iconic Collection’.

It is not the first time a high fashion house has collaborated with H&M to create high fashion at an affordable price. Last year Alber Elbaz worked with H&M on his collection entitled ‘Lanvin for H&M’.

The collection sold out in a matter of minutes. Later, it was found that people who had bought items from the collection were selling them on eBay for a lot more than the original cost price.

The collection will go on sale on November 17 with a pre-spring collection becoming available online from January 19. But make sure to buy quickly. If the previous high street high fashion collections are anything to go by, then stock wont be around for long.
