Earlier in the week JOE was invited to a very swank hotel out in the countryside to have a sneak peak at the all-new Volkswagen Golf.

On first impressions, the all-new VW Golf looks like… a Golf. There’s nothing dramatically different with the car, but it does incorporate the new sharp-line finish that the rest of the VW passenger fleet have gone for.

It does look good, in fairness. It’s slightly longer and slightly wider than the 6th generation, but other than that it’s not that different. VW themselves said the 7th generation is all about ‘evolution and not revolution’. It’s a pretty accurate statement.

While the car looks, feels and drives just like your average Golf it does incorporate some cool techy functions that have never been seen before, such as Active Cylinder Technology. This helps to create an extremely efficient engine capable of 4.7l/100km (combined cycle) and 109 g/km thanks to the ability to deactivate the central two cylinders under light loads.

Basically, it turns your 4-cylinder into a 2-cylinder when you’re not going like the clappers down the motorway. This makes it 23% more efficient than the equivalent engine in the previous version of the Golf. The Park Assist function is also quite cool. It will squeeze you into a parking spot that’s only 80cm longer than the car itself – best of all we tested it on the day and it actually does work.

The entry level 1.2L 3-door petrol starts at only €19,995 – which is great for a car of the Golf’s size – while the diesel line up starts at just €22,695 for the 105bhp 1.6-litre TDI model.

We’ll be getting a proper test-drive of the all-new Golf at the start of the New Year, so make sure to keep your eyes peeled for that.
