JOE’s Classic Song of the Day : Echo and the Bunnymen – Bring On The Dancing Horses

This song is 30 years old this year and still sounds as good as ever

Eric Lalor

This song is 30 years old this year and still sounds as good as ever.

Continuing our look at some of the greatest tunes of all time from all genres, this tune from Liverpool band, Echo and the Bunnymen, is a song for the ages.

Artist, album and year: Echo and the Bunnymen, Songs to Learn and Sing, 1985

Why is it a classic? Arguably the finest moment of Liverpool band Echo and the Bunnymen’s career, this is a timeless classic. It’s hard to fathom that this track is 30 years old this year, but it hasn’t aged a bit and still sounds as fresh and fantastic as when it was first released.

The Bunnymen (we’ll call them that just to speed things up) were not really renowned for their melodic output, but this song and its melody are just infectious.

Ian McCullough, the iconic front-man of the band, delivers a brilliantly moody vocal against the backdrop of layers and layers of synthesizers and swirling guitars. It’s a song which only reached number 21 in the UK and 15 in Ireland, but it is so much better than that.

Did You Know? The song was originally recorded specifically for the cult ’80s movie Pretty in Pink and featured on its soundtrack.

The lyrical hook: ‘First I’m gonna make it, then I’m gonna break it till it falls apart, hating all the faking and shaking while I’m breaking your brittle heart..’
