JOE

It can get fairly chilly up in the Great White North and to mark the launch of Molson Canadian’s Beer Fridge drop, JOE has decided to take a look at some of the coolest Canadians around…

Canada is home to a lot of seriously cool things – and we’re not talking about the brass-monkey weather – from the world’s longest street (Yonge Street measures 2,000km in length) to the world’s smallest jail (The Coby Jail measures only 24.3 sq. metres).

Canada is also home to a few seriously cool celebrities that JOE certainly wouldn’t mind having a drink and a chat with down the pub, so we’ve decided to pick out five of the coolest Canadians.

Jim Carrey

Comedian and actor Jim (James) Carrey was born in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada, on January 17, 1962. Why is Jim on our list? Well, not only is he one of the best-loved comedic actors of the past 20 years, he was also a good friend of Tupac back in the day. Now that’s cool

William Shatner

Actor, director, author, and singer, William Shatner, was born on March 22, 1931, in Côte Saint-Luc, Montreal, Canada. His rendition of Elton John’s ‘Rocket Man’ at the 1978 Science Fiction Film Awards will go down in JOE’s own selective correlation of historical events as one of the coolest performances ever… even if it was incredibly weird.

Leslie Nielsen

The actor and comedian Leslie Nielsen was born on 11 February 1926 in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. He makes JOE’s cool Canadians for his epic list of TV & movie roles that include a few of our all time favourites, such as: Airplane, The Naked Gun trilogy and Police Squad!

Trish Stratus

Trish Stratus, known to her mammy as Patricia Anne Stratigias, is a retired professional wrestler who was born December 18, 1975 in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada. Apart from being one of the most decorated female wrestlers to ever enter the ring, she’s also quite the looker… just sayin’.

Wayne Gretzky

Canadians don’t come much cooler than Wayne Gretzky. He’s known as “The Great One” in ice hockey circles and it’s not hard to see why. At the time of his retirement in 1999, he held 61 NHL records: 40 regular-season records, 15 playoff records, and six All-Star records. Ten years later in 2009, he still held on to 60 of those 61 NHL records.

Extra Cool Canadian – Chris Hadfield

How could we write something about our favourite Canadians without mentioning the legend that is Chris Hadfield. He provided many an epic picture of Ireland while floating around space aboard the ISS and judging by his various interviews and his brilliant TED talk, he seems like an all-round nice guy.
