There’s nothing worse than getting hunger pangs during the day; whether it’s at lunchtime, just before bed or at half time in a World Cup match. So here are JOE’s top five snack combinations to try out when hunger strikes…

No.5: Popcorn and Soy Sauce

Salty popcorn is one of the world’s great snacks. And, if you make it at home or buy it anywhere other than your local cinema, it’s damn cheap too. Some prefer slathering the corn in butter but for a real taste sensation, get out the soy sauce and liberally sprinkle that all over. The corn will soak up the sauce, adding a real deep saltiness to the snack. It will make it a wee bit soggy too, so make sure you eat quickly.

We give an honourable mention here to throwing some Maltesers into your popcorn, but don’t ever add them AND soy sauce to the popcorn. That really doesn’t work (we’ve tried; it failed).

No.4: Peanut butter and jelly (jam)

The peanut butter and jelly sambo is a staple of the American diet, but it’s super easy to make and you don’t have to be from the US to eat one. If you’ve got a sweet tooth in the middle of the afternoon then this is definitely the quick and easy snack for you. A good PB & J sambo also reminds us of this hilarious scene from Family Guy…

No.3: Chicken and Chocolate

Chicken and chocolate may be unlikely bedfellows, but not anymore. ‘Choco Chicken’ is currently sweeping the US with restaurants dedicated to the new flavour combo popping up across the nation faster than you can say, ‘Finger Lickin’ Good’.

While we’ve yet to taste the interesting flavour combo for ourselves, we can only imagine it’s probably tasty enough to stop a certain international football star from chomping into yet another of his unfortunate opponents. Probably…

No.2: Crisp Sambo

Why fix what’s not broken? One of the quickest and easiest sambo combos of all time is the old school Tayto Crisp Sambo (although you can use any kind of crisp you want!). Add a bit of butter to the bread for a slightly sweet and creamy taste and also as a good gripping agent for your broken up crisps.

Just make sure to eat your crunchy concoction over a plate, as it’s easily one of the messiest meals you can create in under a minute. Definitely not one to eat while you’re sitting in bed…

No.1: Fish Finger Sambo/Wrap

One of the tastier snack combos that we’ve come across recently is the Fish Finger Sambo. Add a bit of lettuce or onion, a sauce of your choice and you’ve got yourself one epic and easily made snack that’s sure to fill you up. It’s also a nice nostalgic treat because lets face it; who wasn’t brought up on Fish Fingers back in the day? JOE certainly was…

JOE’s personal favourite Fish Finger Sambo includes a nice bit of iceberg lettuce, some mayonnaise, a dash of sweet chilli sauce and a few piping hot Fish Fingers all wrapped up in a plain or tomato wrap – it depends on what’s in the press. The Fish Finger Sambo is seriously tasty, incredibly easy to make and, best of all, it’s the perfect 3pm slump buster…
