London has topped the list as the most popular overseas destination for Irish holidaymakers for the second year in a row according to the latest Hotels.com Hotel Price Index (HPI®).
The latest report shows that London was the most visited city by Irish holidaymakers in 2010 beating off stiff competition from popular cities such as New York and Barcelona.
When travelling abroad, it seems that we don’t like to go too far from home with European destinations of Barcelona, Paris and Rome all ranking highly.
However the Irish love affair with New York is not over as the Big Apple was the second most visited city after London.
Despite many of us tightening the purse strings last year, we couldn’t resist the bright lights of Sin City with Las Vegas the eight on the list of top destinations for Irish holidaymakers.
Belfast also proved a popular holiday hotspot jumping five places to sixth in the top ten list.
Holidaying at home
Closer to home, Dublin was ranked as Ireland’s favourite home grown holiday spot.
The bi-annual index revealed that the capital is number one on the list for Irish people holidaying at home.
The ever popular Galway took the number two spot while Cork ranked third.
Limerick city and the picturesque town of Killarney took fourth and fifth place to make up the most popular domestic destinations.
Despite being ranked as Ireland’s most expensive destination, Kilkenny jumped from 11th place in 2009 to sixth in 2010.
This is in part due to the 19 per cent fall in hotel room prices experienced in Kilkenny.
