Many major stores have broken with tradition and started their sales on St Stephen’s Day, but Brown Thomas’s flagship store has had to delay by a day.

The event that fills most of the male half of the population with dread has started. The sales have begun, forcing many gloomy men to accompany their womenfolk around the likes of Dundrum Town Centre, which opened for business at 10am.

Most of the stores at the giant shopping centre opened, including the major flagship stores such as House of Fraser and Harvey Nichols.

In Dublin City Centre, the X Factor’s Mary Byrne opened Arnotts sale while, a short distance away, Clery’s on O’Connell Street also opened for business.

Debenhams in Cork, Dublin, Galway, Limerick and Kildare also all started their sales.

But overnight flood damage means that the winter sale at Brown Thomas on Grafton Street in Dublin could not commence as planned.

Management at the store, which had been due to open at 9am today, were alerted to flooding affecting three floors at 4.30am on Sunday morning.

The flooding happened at the rear of the store, causing BT to delay the sale until Monday at 9am and with reduced floor space.

Sales at the department store’s branches in Cork, Galway and Limerick all got underway as planned.
