New figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show men are leaving Ireland in much greater numbers than women.

Almost double the number of men than women emigrated last year according to the CSO figures.

More than 40,000 men left the country in search of work and a better life, compared to fewer than 25,000 women.

The gap between the sexes has widened in recent years, as only 10 years ago emigrations was 50/50 between men and women.

Male emigrants currently outnumber women two to one in the 25-44 age bracket.

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate for men has more than trebled to 16.7pc in the last few years, while for women it’s doubled to 9.8pc, with 863,000 women working (56.4pc) compared to 996,000 (64.5pc) men.
