How many hours a week do you work?
There’s probably not a person in Ireland who hasn’t had to work extra hours and overtime, but if you’re doing it on a consistent basis, it could be bad for your liver.
A new study, involving 330,000 people in 14 countries across Europe, has found that people who work 55 hours a week are 13% more likely to consume “risky” levels of alcohol as a way of relieving stress.
We know 55 hours a week is a lot, eleven hours a day (no, we didn’t use a calculator), but people are doing it and scientist say it’s something that can’t be ignored.
The researchers found the relationship between alcohol consumption is nothing to do with age, sex or class, but it’s down to shift patterns and working hours.
The study which being published in the British Medical Journal has prompted employers to stick to EU limits on the length of the working week (not more than 48 hours a week).
By the way, “risky” levels of alcohol are considered to be more than 21 units of alcohol/week for men and more than 14 units/week for women.
If you’re doing crazy hours, show this to your boss.
