Pic: This pyramid made up of over 700 cans of Dutch Gold in Maynooth will take some beating

Truly a sight to behold

Conor Heneghan

A magnificent structure like this wouldn’t look out of place in Egypt itself.

There are certainly nicer beers, but there is arguably no beer in Irish colleges that has attained the same cult status that Dutch Gold has over the years.

Sure, it loses its taste quickly and it can be a struggle to drink the bottom half of the can because it’s lost all of its fizz, but it’s cheap as chips and drinking it remains a sort of rite of passage at numerous colleges across the country.

Part of the appeal of drinking Dutch Gold is building a pyramid assembled solely from Dutch Gold cans and the one below assembled by a gang of students from Maynooth will take some beating.

The pyramid is a few years old, but JOE reader Shane O’Sullivan was moved to send it our way today having recently reminisced about it with his housemates from first year at NUI Maynooth.

He tells us that it took six months to assemble the 707 cans from which the pyramid is built and that the cans were mostly supplied by John and his four housemates.

Occasionally, a couple of their mates chipped in, while they also collected other cans after house parties in the house where cans of Dutch Gold were the only cans allowed.

Think you or your college mates can do better? Feel free to send your efforts our way on Facebook, Twitter or editorial@joe.ie.
