Research shows that holidaying abroad is cheaper than staying in Ireland

If you thought that holidaying at home could save you some money, think again. New research has shown that the cost of a holiday abroad could actually be cheaper than staying in Ireland.

This may come as a surprise, as for years the ‘staycation’ was considered a great way to save your money while also getting a bit of a break. However, according to figures from the Thomas Cook cost of living survey, heading to hotter climes could result in more money in your bank account.

The survey looked at the cost of general everyday items across 7 sun destinations and then compared them with prices in Ireland. The results found that every single sun destination actually beat Ireland for value.

In fact, items in Tunisia were up to 50 per cent cheaper, while items in Portugal and Spain were at least 40 per cent cheaper. The everyday items that were priced included beer, coffee, a three course meal and cigarettes.

The survey also looked at the expense of a week’s holiday abroad and a week’s holiday in Ireland. A week-long, all inclusive holiday for a family of four in the Costa Del Sol during August worked out at €200 cheaper than a holiday in Westport. And let’s not forget that by going abroad you have a better chance of warmer temperatures and sunny weather.

“Our research shows that overseas holidays can still be cheaper options for families looking to get away during the summer months,” said Sharon Harney of Thomas Cook Ireland.

“While prices here have come down in recent years, the fact is that the cost of staycationing in Ireland is still relatively high in European terms,” she added.

Ms Harney said that the main reason why Irish holidays can be so pricey is due to the lack of sunshine, as parents generally have to fork out for activities to keep the kids amused.

What do you think? Would you rather head abroad or try your chances in Ireland this summer?
