A brilliant food festival in Dublin, the return of the lads in 22 Jump Street and Irish band Heroes In Hiding will keep us entertained this week.
Taste of Dublin 2014
Yes we know the World Cup is on but the time difference means that for most of the day you are free to leave the house, get some fresh air, food and enjoy yourself. And there is nowhere in the country better to do that this week than at Taste of Dublin 2014.
Tickets start at just €15 (get yours here) for the event that runs from June 12-15. As always, it is stuffed with things for the serious foodie to enjoy as well as lots of demonstrations for the more novice chef among us.
Some of the biggets names in the business will be in the Iveagh Gardens to showcase their wares and if you are suffering World Cup withdrawal symptoms, they even have a Brazilian quarter set up so you can pretend you are in Rio.
Aldi are hosting one of the more unusual attractions this year, called ’28 by Aldi’. A specially constructed steak restaurant, cooking 28-day-aged Aldi steaks of course, will be there, staffed by Michelin Star Chef Cormac Rowe, executive chef of Mount Juliet.

You can book your spot for a three-course meal there by contacting the Aldi Maitre’d on-site. Demand will be high so make sure you get in early.

“Previously on 21 Jump Street…”
Here at JOE Towers, we’re huge fans of the movie reboot of the iconic 1980s TV cop show, 21 Jump Street. The brilliant buddy cop film, which came out in 2012, starred Jonah Hill as Officer Schmidt and Channing ‘The Human Neck’ Tatum as Officer Jenko, two rookie cops who were forced to relive High School when they went undercover to prevent the outbreak of a dangerous new drug.
Fast forward two years and the bad-guy bustin’ best buds are assigned exactly same mission… this time in college. Let the fun times begin.
Helmed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, two directors with an unbelievably brilliant track record of films (21 Jump Street, The Lego Movie, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs), 22 Jump street is already one of JOE’s most favouritestest films of 2014.
Super smart, magnificently meta and downright hilarious from start to finish, the crackin’ comedy sequel is a joy to watch, with superb comic performances from the two leads in particular. Congratulations 22 Jump Street, you’ve graduated with First Class Honours (SUBTLE COLLEGE REFERENCE).
Go see it and bow down before our new comedy overlords, Phil Lord and Chris Miller – the new Kings of Comedy.
Heroes In Hiding
Say hello to JOE’s new favourite band, Heroes In Hiding.
Did you say hello? Good.
Originally formed in 2006, the fantastic four-piece folk rock band were on a brief break for a few years but, in true Blues Brothers style, got the band back together again in 2013. Members Oisin Jacob, Liam McCabe, Cian Donohoe and – great name here – Joe Carroll, have spent the last nine months writing and perfecting their brand new EP ‘Hush’, a four-track album which is available for immediate download here.
If you’re interested in hearing the lads live – which we know you definitely are – you can check them out in Dublin’s Grand Social on Friday 13th June where they’ll be celebrating the release of their single ‘Can’t Dance’… or you can travel to Iceland to hear them perform at the Secret Solstice International Music and Arts Festival on Friday 20th June. Whichever’s handiest for yourself really.
*JOE immediately checks out Ryanair flights to Iceland*
To whet your aural appetite in the meantime though, why not wrap your earholes around the band’s excellent EP title track, ‘Hush.’ Trust us, they’re folkin’ brilliant…
You can find out more about Heroes In Hiding and their upcoming gigs (including Castlepalooza Music And Arts Festival) on their Facebook page here, and you can follow them (and send them dirty nudey pics) on Twitter here.
