Do you reckon you come in above or below the average?
According to a recent study, only five countries in the world drink more beer per person than in Ireland and as you might have suspected, all five of those countries are in Europe; our fondness for pints in this part of the world is well-documented at this stage.
The study, which was carried out by Euromonitor International, reveals that an Irish person drinks an average of 93 litres of beer (approximately 163 pints) every year.
Bear in mind, however, that drinks like cider or craft beer aren’t included and that the average figure is population based and includes non-drinkers and people who, for example, tend to drink spirits on a night out.
The Czech Republic, where the average person drinks 143 litres (just over 250 pints) of beer in a year, came out on top ahead of Germany in second, Austria in third and Estonia and Poland in fourth and fifth places respectively.
The study also found that more beer is drank in China in a year than anywhere else (a whopping 54 billion litres per year) but because of the country’s massive population, it works out at just four litres per person per year.
