TDs will debate on whether or not to call for release of young Irish-Egyptian man

Carl Kinsella

Depending on when an election is called.

Fine Gael TD Alan Shatter has tabled a motion in the Dáil that, if passed, would move the government to all for Irish-Egyptian man Ibrahim Halawa.

Halawa was infamously arrested in Egyptian during the Arab Spring protests at the age of 17, and has been held in prison for over three years with his trial repeatedly delayed for various reasons.

If the motion were to pass, the Irish government would take a step towards securing the young man’s release, but it is possible that, depending on when an election is called and the Dáil dissolved, that the motion will not be voted on anytime soon, and that a new motion might be required after the election is held.
