There’s a poll to name this £200m vessel ‘Boaty McBoatface’

Paul Moore

We hope that the public bows to pier pressure.

Cinematic history has provided us with loads of memorable names for boats. For example; Forrest Gump and Lieutenant Dan had about 12 boats named Jenny while Quint, Hooper and Chief Brody from Jaws really did need a bigger boat in that film. These two are just the tip of the iceberg. What’s the name of that film with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet?

There’s a new contender for the title of best name for a boat though because a public vote has been created to find a moniker for the new £200m Royal Research Ship and the public have provided the codfather of all names.

The current-front runner for the vessel’s name name is the RRS Boaty McBoatface.

If the name sticks, Boaty McBoatface will replace the RRS James Clark Ross and RRS Ernest Shackleton. It’s aboat time also because we’re really getting tired of hearing boring names. That ship has sailed and the tide is turning.

Some of the other gas names that are up for contention include the RRS Ice Ice Baby and the RRS Usain Boat. Simply put, Boaty McBoatface needs to happen.
