These are the moments of 2016 which made Irish people the happiest

2016 has been a year of highs and lows…

One thing is for sure about this year, Reeling in the Years are going to have to do a day-long special when it comes around to reviewing 2016 and all the drama that came along with it.

For a lot of people, it will be remembered for the lows rather than the highs as we bid farewell to good people, met with Brexit, and an introduction to the President-elect of the USA, Donald Trump.

But there were some great moments mixed in with the bad (who can forget Chicago or Euro 2016?), and gift card company One4All have compiled a survey where they found out which moments of 2016 made Irish people the happiest.

We’ve excelled in the sporting world over the past 12 months and unsurprisingly, these achievements ranked very highly on people’s list of the happiest moments of 2016.

41% of those surveyed put Ireland’s famous win over the All Blacks in Chicago as their favourite sporting moment of the year with the wonderful achievements of the O’Donovan brothers at the Rio Olympics coming in second with 13%.

Robbie Brady’s goal against Italy at Euro 2016 came in third with 12%.

In terms of non-sporting moments, of the 1,352 people surveyed, 39% agreed that the week long heatwave we had this year provided the most cheer, with the 1916 celebrations at the GPO coming second with 31%.

Amazingly, President Michael D. Higgins provided a one of the moments of the year for a lot of people when a photo emerged of him queuing for an ATM in Dublin.

Good old Michael D.
