This goes out to anyone who wonders why airplanes still have ashtrays

Tony Cuddihy

Obviously you can’t smoke while flying, so why are there always ashtrays in airplane toilets?

According to Indy100, the reason is that people still choose to break the law.

Health and safety rules state that ashtrays must be provided even though smoking has been banned on flights for years and years now.

The reason for this is that somebody who chooses to break the law and smoke anyway must have somewhere they can stub out their illicit fag.

The rule has been in place since a plane crashed on a flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris in 1973. Somebody threw their lit cigarette in a bin and started a fire, causing the cabin to fill with smoke.

A crash landing killed 123 people.
