Have you fallen victim to the designer bug yet? No, we’re not talking about some creepy little insect that has great taste, we’re talking about designer fashion. Why? Well it turns out that it’s not only women who like to splash the cash when it comes to clothing…
Reuters reports that more and more men across the globe have increased their spending on fancy clothes in a bid to look more presentable and stylish in their daily lives and fashion executives are saying that television is to thank for this stylish revolution.
Apparently fashion experts believe the influence of fashion-forward television shows, such as Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire, is to blame for the current boom in the designer menswear industry.
“Men are just waking up to the beauty of being dressed well,” said Claus-Dietrich Lahrs, the chief executive of Hugo Boss.
In fact, Hugo Boss currently generates the vast majority of its sales from its menswear collection rather than its fragrance range. And according to reports from the fashion house, their income from menswear is continuing to grow at a rapid pace. So it turns out that while men poke fun at the ladies in their lives for their inexplicable love of labels, men themselves are starting to become just as bad.
In fact, the worldwide designer menswear market continues to grow by 14 per cent a year – this is actually double the pace of designer women’s wear.
While the demand for designer men’s labels is currently slowing down in Europe, due to increased unemployment and the dire condition of the economy, in China sales figures continue to rocket. More and more men in the US are jumping on the label bandwagon now too.
Experts have said that the increase of fashionable male characters in television shows (such as Don Draper in Mad Men) and the rise of male-orientated fashion blogs has led to men experimenting with their looks and investing in expensive clothing.
“These shows are having an influence on the way guys are dressing,” said Matthew Singer, the director of men’s fashion at Neiman Marcus.
“Men are also less shy about buying accessories such as bracelets and scarves,” he said.
What’s your view on expensive clothing? Do you favour designer labels?
