Topman has pulled two t-shirts from its stores and official website and a flurry of outraged tweets and direct complaints decried the clothes as ‘sexist.
One of the shirts carried a checklist of tick-box answers of apology to a girlfriend, including “You provoked me” and “I was drunk”.
It had been suggested that perhaps the t-shirt hinted at domestic abuse, with a member of a recently-created STopman Facebook group stating “Many woman and children flee for their lives every year from domestic violence. It’s very poor taste to promote it.” The second shirt features the tagline “Nice new girlfriend – what breed is she?”
Topman has since apologised for both t-shirts and offered the following apology:
“We have received some negative feedback regarding two of our printed T-shirts. Whilst we would like to stress that these T-shirts were meant to be light-hearted and carried no serious meaning, we have made the decision to remove these from store and online as soon as possible.”We would like to apologise to those who may have been offended by these designs.”
