Here we have footage of what it looks like to be an F1 driver racing around the Spanish Grand Prix track, Circuit de Catalunya, in Barcelona.
The camera used in the video is unique compared to other ‘in car’ videos as the camera sits at the drivers eye level, so you can really get a feel for what its like to be behind the wheel – instead of on top of the air intake.
Lucas di Grassi is the man behind the helmet and the guy we have to thank for this glorious footage. While out testing new Pirelli tyres in a Toyota F1 car, di Grassi strapped a camera to his helmet and took off. The only problem was that the camera obscured di Grassi’s vision.
“I had to drive with only one eye open as the camera was blocking my other eye, quite tricky,” he said after the test run.
We really like the new camera and its incredible point of view. It would be fantastic to watch an entire race from this angle and the fact that it would obscure half the driver’s vision, would only add to the entertainment. Or, cause utter mayhem.
Either way, the video has got us pumped for the Bavaria City Racing that’s coming to Dublin in the summer. It’s going to be class.
