Who’d be a best man at an Irish wedding these days?
Once upon a time all you had to do for a speech was thank the priest and the hotel, tell the bride and the bridesmaids how well they looked, tell a few jokes at the groom’s expense and you’d be done and dusted in a few minutes.
Now, best men all over the country are pulling out all the stops.
They’re making short films, they’re singing songs and they’re obviously putting in a huge amount of effort and preparation before the wedding so everything goes off without a hitch on the day.
Benny Rock is one of those men making all other best men look bad, having performed a song while on best man duty for his best mate Ronan McCawley and Ronan’s new wife Sinead at their wedding recently.
Ronan, who sent us in the video and takes a fair bit of abuse throughout the song, tells us that Benny kept the song a secret before the wedding and blew everyone away on the day.
Everything from pints, Pro Evo and running through Lahinch ‘in the buff’ get a mention and though it’s a lengthy anthem that clocks in at just under seven minutes, it’s well worth listening to it in its entirety as there are some belting one-liners included right throughout.
