Ten fans were injured during the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday after a TV camera wire became entangled with the cars on track.
Three of the injured fans were taken to hospital after a rope from a FOX Sports overhead camera fell from the grandstands and landed on the track.
Thankfully, a Charlotte Motor Speedway spokesperson confirmed the three people taken to the hospital had “minor injuries that were not life threatening.”
FOX Sports released a statement last night saying they hadn’t figured out the cause of the incident and that they were suspending the use of the camera system involved. Here’s a look at what happened.
“The camera itself did not come down because guide ropes acted as designed,” Fox said in the statement. “A full investigation is planned, and use of the camera is suspended indefinitely.”
“We certainly regret that the system failure affected tonight’s event, we apologise to the racers whose cars were damaged, and our immediate concern is for the race fans.
“We also offer a sincere thank you to the staff at CMS for attending to the injuries and keeping us informed on this developing situation.”
The incident above happened on lap 121 of the 400-lap race and caused a 27-minute delay. Kevin Harvick driving the No. 29 Budweiser Chevrolet SS would eventually go on to win the crash filled race.
In other NASCAR news, the hottest driver on the grid (aka. the only female), Danica Patrick, was involved in a crash with her current boyfriend Ricky Stenhouse Jr. after he nudged Danica’s car into the No. 10 Chevy of Brad Keselowski. The technical term for the move is a ‘Doghouse Tap’.
Now, here’s that obligatory pic of Danica – seeing as her name was mentioned.
