Well played lads.
Call us nostalgic, but there was a time when an Irish wedding followed a certain formula and everyone knew the deal. No alarms and no surprises, but a great day and night was guaranteed all the same.
These days, that formula has been well and truly ripped up as it appears as if there’s always an element of the unexpected about the big day.
Best man broadcasting a short film instead of a speech has become popular, as has calling upon some celebrity guests to make it an even more special occasion.
Dick O’Sullivan married the love of his life Lynda in the Ferrycarrig Hotel in Wexford on Saturday (Valentine’s Day), and if he thought it was going to be a run of the mill affair, he had another thing coming.
Since November, Lynda saw to it that a gang of Dick’s best friends would start rehearsing a big dance to be pulled out on the big day, with Lynda herself and Kelly Maltby, the owner of Sheila Grace Dance Company, training them and overseeing rehearsals.
Dick, of course, hadn’t a clue what was going on and was being fed excuses, not only by Lynda, but by some of his best friends.
They were busy channelling their inner John Travolta in dance halls, squash courts and sitting rooms rather than meeting up with Dick to watch football on Wednesdays.
The covert operation went off without a hitch and the lads performed the dance magnificently on the day, even if some of them could be accused of enjoying themselves too much when shaking their booties for the ‘Sexy and I Know It’ part of the routine.
A friend of the couple, Aoife Dunne, tells us that Dick got a great kick out of it and even got a little bit emotional too; in fairness, it was some effort that the lads put in and no doubt they wouldn’t have done so if Dick didn’t deserve it.
The same goes for Lynda, of course.
Safe to say that Dick and Lynda are never going to forget their wedding day after that.
Hat-tip to Aoife Dunne for sending this one our way.
