Incredible stuff from Ciaran O’Connell.
Normally, when we’re sent videos of Irish people abroad we get a lot of drinking, some dancing, people jumping into water, more drinking, drunken dancing and some festival footage.
This is not that video.
Ciaran O’Connell, originally from Malahide in Dublin but living in Berlin, filmed 11 countries on his travels and came up with something far more Apocalypse Now than The Inbetweeners. It’s all the better for it.
“An exploratory montage of the sights and sounds of South East Asia,” he writes.
“A place that has always seemed so intriguing led me on a journey through 11 countries, discovering some brutal and uncomfortable truths and histories of Vietnam, Cambodia and more, where insane wars and senseless massacres raged on in the 20th century.
“After seeing bright and innocent eyes shining in the children, it is hard not to be tormented by the memory that not so long ago, that spark was stolen from so many.
“The same faces are alive today. Asia lives on with a refreshing vibrancy and colour, never abandoning traditions and rituals from past centuries with a rooted wisdom of the world that so many people are oblivious to.”
