Recently, JOE’s Oisín Collins was invited down to the Mondello Park to check out some nifty VW Commercial Vehicles and the much talked about VW Caddy Racer.
When we heard that a Volkswagen van could easily compete with Golf R32’s and Golf GTI’s out on a circuit we thought it would be best to see this unholy beast in the flesh. That’s exactly what I did recently as I was invited down to Mondello Park to see the 2.0 litre, 4-cylinder, 16-valve monster in action.
The Caddy Racer is certainly a vehicle that you’ll hear before you see. Although, having said that, its green and orange paint job is pretty hard to miss. The Caddy Racer has been competing in the VW championship over in the UK and it’s easily proving that you don’t need to have you’re a*se an inch off the ground to be in a proper racing machine. This was clearly shown to those of us who were lucky enough to sit in the passenger seat of the Caddy for a few laps around Mondello. It was one of those situations where you just wish you had a racing license (which when I think about it is basically every other day).
After being taken around the track in the VW Caddy Racer I was then let loose on VW’s new pick up truck called the Amarok (the big black yoke in the video). It was a great vehicle to drive but it was just as enjoyable standing there looking at it in all its glory – an absolute stunner. It’s a fairly big piece of kit but its just as easy and nimble to drive as any small city car.
Afterwards, VW’s Niall Phillips was kind enough to show me around the new Volkswagen California. To those of you who are unaware of the new California, it’s basically a hotel on wheels. There’s so much to see in the California that you’d nearly need a full day just to explore what’s on offer.
Anyway, enough words. Check out the video to see both the VW Caddy Racer and the Amarok in action.
