VIDEO: JOE’s guide to dressing for work

JOE

Not every workplace insists on a full suit and tie anymore, there’s greater variety than ever in how people dress for the office but with more choice there’s often more problems.

Showing up in the wrong outfit for an interview, an office outing or an important meeting can be disastrous. So we’ve teamed up with Remus Uomo and the editor of Irish Tatler Man, Alexander Fitzgerald, to choose 5 great looks for any work occasion.

The video walks you through every occasion from interview to after work drinks so you can always be dressed to impress.

Interview

It’s all about making the right first impression, you want to look professional but still demonstrate a bit of personality and style. Alex chose a great wool-rich blue checked suit (€425), paired with a simple white shirt and black Oxford shoes – on trend but business-like.

First day on the job

If someone mentioned ‘smart casual’ in your interview but you haven’t quite sussed out how casual to go, always dress up rather than show up in your jeans and a hoodie. The perfect first day outfit is Alex’s next look – a light-blue slim-fit suit (€400), and a slim fit, print cotton shirt with a subtle paisley design (€69), paired with a pair of white trainers to keep the look fresh.

Putting the ‘smart’ in ‘smart casual’

The more casual your workplace is the better, as this gives you more choice in your outfit and a bit more individuality in what you wear. However, it still doesn’t mean rocking into the office wearing your onesie or spag bol stained joggers. Even if you’re not wearing a suit, the top brass will still expect you to look tidy and exhibit some sort of style – so keep it sharp to impress your colleagues.

Alex’s next choice is a great example of a more casual look which still shows plenty of personality. Perfect for the brighter days of spring / summer, Alex chose this lightweight raspberry tweed jacket (€229), a simple grey t-shirt (€69), worn with cotton chinos (€89.95).

Dress down Friday

Alex takes on dressed down Friday with a light blue cotton-linen blazer (€220), which is perfect as temperatures (eventually) rise. To keep the look smart, he paired this with rinse-washed dark denim jeans (€89.95).

Office drinks

Being asked out for after work drinks is a great opportunity to drop the formality and get to know your colleagues. It’s an occasion where you still want to look good but without trying too hard.

Alex teamed a tailored shirt (€69) with an interesting abstract dot effect, with a slim fit crew neck sweater (€65). For the bottom half, he chose a wool rich suit trouser (€75), which is versatile enough to be dressed up or down and can be used as part of a suit or on its own. It’s all tied together with a two tone navy Leather Derby Shoe (€199) – making for the perfect office, to pub, to club to kebab-shop-on-the-way-home outfit.image007
