10 things only people from Galway will understand

We've got arts, racing and so much more

JOE

Here’s to Galway, the city of the tribes.

From the drummers on Shop Street, to the punters in Ballybrit, this is for you.

From the hipsters in the Roisín, to the sexy Garda outside Supermacs, this is for you.

Galway is YOUR city and these are the things only YOU understand.

1. Race Week divides the city

If punting is your thing, this week is your time to shine. If not, then you probably like Race Week about as much as Cork people like Mick McCarthy.

2. You HAVE TO kick the wall in Salthill

If you’re walking the prom in Salthill and reach the end, you must kick the wall… no, we don’t know why either.

3. Supermac’s after a night out is essential

There’s nothing quite like eating a snack box, while having a dance.

4. The Oscar Wilde statue is a fantastic meeting spot after a night out

Or rather, the Eduard Vilde statue.

5. Donegal Tuesday is the strangest day of the year

Hundreds of Donegal students queuing to get into a pub in Galway on a Tuesday morning? Yes, it’s definitely strange.

6. Spanish Arch is the best place to be on sunny days

Relaxing down at Sp’Arch with a beverage is nothing short of heaven on earth.

7. The Big Top is the best music venue on the planet

Nothing beats the Galway Arts Festival and, more often than not, the Big Top gigs are the highlight.

8. Everything you need for the perfect lunch can be found at the market

The curries are legendary and don’t even get us started on the doughnuts.

9. A night in the Roisín ain’t complete until you’ve been to the photo booth

And the embarrassing day-after-the-night-before post-mortem on Facebook.

10. No matter where you are in the world, you’ll always miss McDonagh’s chips

So, so good. The real McD’s.

This is Galway through the eyes of JOE.

How would you like to see your city through the eyes of Ireland’s funniest comedians?

JOE, with thanks to Sprite, are bringing Hilary Rose, The Viper, Eric Lalor and Karl Spain to Galway (NUIG) on March 25.

We’ll also be bringing them to Dublin (Trinity), Limerick (UL) and Cork (UCC) for the The Sprite Refreshing Truth Tour.

The Sprite Refreshing Truth Tour is a comedy roast with a twist.

Each location will have a comedian from the area to defend their hometown, while the other three tell the hilarious, yet refreshing truth.

For more information, dates of the events and your chance to win some epic prizes, click here.

Sprite, the truth is refreshing.
