Make the most of your travels.
Ireland’s four seasons in a minute is fun and all, but sometimes you’ve just got to get away.
Broadening horizons, witnessing wonderful cultures and getting the shift from a hot South American are just some of the amazing things that happen when you go travelling.
But before you go, you should make sure you’re definitely ready. Here are JOE’s top 10 tips for going on a mega-trip.
Patience
Getting angry over things you have no control over is about as useful as waterproof tea-bags.
Delayed flights, missed bus journeys and unexpected obstacles can be frustrating, but remember some of the best times while travelling can be had while in transit.
Separate your sources of money
Having all your cash, ATM cards and traveller cheques (do people still use these?) in the one place is crazy. If you accidentally leave it behind or someone else purposefully takes it away then you’re screwed.
Separate your sources of cash so that if the worst happens, it doesn’t mean you’re completely pole-axed.
Read reviews
With sites such a TripAdvisor now hugely popular amongst back-packers, there is absolutely no excuse for not being in the know.
Take loads of photos
This is the time of your life, so you’ll want to be able to look back on it fondly. Ensure you snap, snap, snap. Just make sure you have your best pose on before Instragram-ing.
Avoid PDAs
Where not talking about scoring in public. That’s relatively fine… maybe not in the Vatican though.
We’re talking about public displays of affluence.
Don’t go to a poverty stricken area and whip out shed load of money. If you do, it mightn’t be there the next time you check.
Rise early
Get up a couple hours earlier than you normally would. This will help you avoid queues at attractions, set yourself up for the day and witness a new exotic place come out of slumber.
Get travel insurance
Accidents can and do happen, so you want to be ready for any eventuality.
Meet the locals and experience local culture
The best thing about travelling is experiencing cultures that are totally alien to you.
Don’t be afraid to embrace new and exciting experiences.
Pack ear plugs
Travelling around the world can be a noisy experience. From long, hectic bus journeys to hostels that are full of boisterous stag parties, it doesn’t exactly make for the perfect sleeping experience. Pack ear plugs, you’ll be delighted you did.
Get lost on purpose
Get off the beaten track. That’s where the real culture is.
So there you have it, 10 tips for going travelling.
We’ll even give you a bonus one for getting this far: Enjoy yourself.
