11 new TV shows that you’ll be watching very soon

Paul Moore

Add them to your list.

The nights are getting longer and with that, you’re going to need some new TV shows to get stuck into. We’ve already told you about the highest rated shows of the year but there’s no such thing as too much TV.

With this in mind, here are some titles – from Ireland and elsewhere – that jumped out at us.

Westworld

The pitch: A series inspired by the 1973 film of the same title written by Michael Crichton about a futuristic theme park populated by artificial beings.

Watch it because: The plot is mind-bending and the talent involved is extremely impressive with Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden and Jeffery wright all starring.

Luke Cage

The pitch: Given superstrength and durability by a sabotaged experiment, a wrongly accused man escapes prison to become a superhero for hire.

Watch it because: Mike Colter was very impressive in Jessica Jones and the Marvel universe on TV seems like it has a carefully structured plan in place, just like its cinematic counterpart. This should be the perfect precursor for Iron Fist and The Defenders.

Amanda Knox

The pitch: Was she a cold-blooded psychopath who brutally murdered her roommate or a naive study abroad student trapped in an endless nightmare?

Watch it because: In a world that remains strongly divided on the legal findings, Amanda Knox goes beyond guilt or innocence to shed new light on the events and circumstances of the past nine years. Featuring unprecedented access to key people involved and never-before-seen archival material, the film shifts between past to present, exploring the case from the inside out in exclusive interviews with Amanda Knox, her former co-defendant and ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, Italian prosecutor Giuliano Mignini and Daily Mail reporter Nick Pisa.

The Tommy Tiernan Show

The pitch: Sticking with the Meath comedian’s gift for improv, neither the host nor the audience know the identity of the guests until they walk out on stage. This could be really interesting.

Watch it because: Fans of Tommy Tiernan will know exactly what to expect and the concept has already proven to be a hit on 2FM. We’re expecting scenes like this.

The Exorcist

The pitch: Two very different priests tackle one family’s case of terrifying demonic possession.

Watch it because: The power of Christ compels you! In all seriousness, the original is still an absolute classic but the sequels have been subjected to the laws of diminishing returns. Here’s hoping that a small screen version can breathe new life into the iconic franchise.

Making History

The pitch: History and pop culture collide as three friends find a way to travel through time.

Watch it because: The Lego Movie and Jump Street creators Phil Lord and Chris Miller are behind this one and we love the surreal tone of this time travelling comedy. It also has ham, lots and lots of ham.

Berlin Station

The pitch: Daniel Meyer/Miller (Richard Armitage), has just arrived at the CIA foreign station in Berlin. Meyer has a clandestine mission: to uncover the source of a leak who has supplied information to a now-famous whistleblower named Thomas Shaw.

Watch it because: We do love a good espionage drama and this might fill the void following The Night Manger. The cast here is great with Richard Armitage, Richard Jenkins and Rhys Ifans all starring.

The Crown

The pitch: The Crown focuses on Queen Elizabeth II as a 25-year-old newlywed faced with the daunting prospect of leading the world’s most famous monarchy while forging a relationship with legendary Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill.

Watch it because: It’s set to be the most expensive show on Netflix and it’s created by Peter Morgan, writer of Rush, Frost/Nixon, The Damned United and The Queen.

Stan Against Evil

The pitch: An aging police sheriff who has recently lost his position due to an angry outburst begrudgingly joins an alliance with new sheriff, Evie Barret to battle angry demons haunting their small New Hampshire town.

Watch it because: We’re getting a very strong Ash vs The Evil Dead vibe here. John C McGinley (Dr Cox in Scrubs) is back to do battle against monsters, demons and satanic barnyard animals!

Gogglebox Ireland

The pitch: Ireland’s most opinionated and avid TV viewers comment freely on the best and worst television shows of the past week

Watch it because:  Who wouldn’t love to see an Irish perspective on what’s happening around the world and the role that TV is currently playing in people’s lives.
GB

Vice Principals

The pitch: An over protective father is obsessed with becoming a principal and competes against the popular vice principal. However something happens that makes them work together to save the day.

Watch it because: Danny McBride and Jody Hill are back for the first time since they worked together on Eastbound and Down. This is a very, very good thing.

All this without mentioning Training Day, Lethal Weapon, Shooter or the new version of MacGyver. Patty and Selma must be disgusted with us.
