Here are the 5 best movies on the TV tonight

Rory Cashin

Featuring two of the best comedies of the last decade.

This weekend is a big one in the cinema. LOTS of new releases, including gangster epic Yardie (we spoke to director Idris Elba about it right here), missing child thriller Searching, ultra-violent action revenger Upgrade, and puppet comedy The Happytime Murders (we also spoke to the “lead” “actor” of that movie, right here).

You can listen to our reviews of them all (as well as everything else in the cinema right now) in the latest episode of The Big Reviewski here:

But before all that, there are some great movies to check on the box tonight!

THURSDAY 30 AUGUST

Men In Black – Film 4 – 5.05pm

Before the remake – starring Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson and Liam Neeson, no less! – arrives next year, remind yourself of the first / best / only good one so far, with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones defending the Earth from the scum of the universe.

The Martian – Film 4 – 9.00pm

Matt Damon stars as an astronaut who is accidentally left behind on Mars, and must use his science-y ingenuity to survive the several hundred days before a rescue mission can be launched and he can be saved. The supporting cast – Jessica Chastain, Donald Glover, Chiwetel Ejifor, Jeff Daniels, Kristen Wiig, Michael Pena, Kate Mara, Sean Bean, Benedict Wong, and more besides – is INSANE.

Bridesmaids – ITV2 – 9.00pm

Kristen Wiig again, but this time in the movie that propelled her to superstardom, as the bride of honour for her best friend’s upcoming wedding. She soon feels her life beginning to unravel with the arrival of Rose Byrne’s competitive fellow-bridesmaid. Features a bride-to-be pooping in the street while trying on her wedding dress.

Step Brothers – Comedy Central – 9.00pm

“Haha, that’s so funny the last time I heard that, I laugh so hard I fell off my dinosaur!”

A Date For Mad Mary – Virgin Media Three – 9.30pm

One of the best Irish movies of the last decade, with an incredible Seána Kerslake playing “Mad” Mary McArdle, who returns to her hometown after a brief stint in prison and is immediately labeled as undatable, but she is determined to find a date to accompany her to her best friend’s wedding.
