Here are the 6 best movies on TV tonight

Rory Cashin

Includes one of the best hidden gems of Irish cinema from the last few years.

Just one more day until IT Chapter Two is released in cinemas. Should you go see it? Well, check out our review right here to find out.

But if you need your movie fix to tide you over until then, you could do worse than one of these:

THURSDAY 5 SEPTEMBER

The Maze Runner – Film4 – 6.50pm

A group of teenagers wake up in the middle of a futuristic maze, with no memory of how they got there, and no idea of how to get out. A brilliant set-up to a series that would quickly devolve into another Hunger Games-lite, but for this first movie, it was actually pretty decent.

Men In Black – E4 – 8pm

Four movies later, and the first is still the best, thanks to the unique chemistry between larger-than-life Will Smith, and so-stoic-we-think-his-heart-has-stopped Tommy Lee Jones. And we’ve said it before and we’ll keep saying it, Vincent D’Onforio’s performance in this as the evil alien wearing “an Edgar suit” needs to be studied.

Bad Teacher – Comedy Central – 9pm

Cameron Diaz is the not-good-educator of the title, but she decides to attempt to be good at her job when she fancies new arrival Justin Timberlake, who is a goodie-two-shoes who only dates people who love what they do for a living.

Daybreakers – Syfy – 10pm

Set in the year 2019 (it was made in 2009, so they didn’t have much hope for us), most of the world’s population are now vampires, which has caused a major blood drought, and may kick off a vampire civil-war. Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, and Sam Neill elevate the trashy “28 Days Later meets The Matrix but not as good as either” vibe.

Bad Neighbours – Film4 – 11.15pm

Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne go to war with their new neighbours, which happens to be a college frat house run by the best party-starter in the state (played by a surprisingly funny Zac Efron).

Citizen Lane – RTE One – 12.10am

In Dublin in the early 20th century, Hugh Lane (played by Tom Vaughn-Lawlor) fights to establish a public modern art gallery to show the work of living artists until his untimely death on the Lusitania. We know that doesn’t sound super interesting, but trust us, it is one of the best hidden gems of Irish cinema from the last few years.
